Procrastination is mainly the act of postponing what needs to be done, to later. Now I myself used to procrastinate A LOT, but the good news is that I am working on it, and am doing pretty well. So if I can do it, then you can do it too :-). So here I have compiled five things you need to start doing in order to stop your procrastinating habit.
Plan Ahead!- Yup. If you want to stop procrastinating, then you need to start planning ahead. You can start by getting yourself a planner. Trust me, that was definitely a game changer for me. Just the act of writing things down will make the task stick somewhere in your subconscious. You need to make a phone call or send that email? Write it down or type it in your phone and put a specific time (For example email Brenda at 1 pm) and make sure that you do it at that time!
Do it now!– Yes, I know. Generally, we usually don’t do it, because we just don’t feel as to do it or we feel like it’s not the right time to do it. Let me tell you something: It will never be the right time! Even if it doesn’t feel good right now, just do it. You need to write a research paper? Just start writing now, and by the time you realize it, you would have gone a long way in your work.
Keep the distractions away!– Sometimes, the little things like our phone, the music in the background can be big distractions. Try and shut those distractions down for a minute and it will definitely make a difference. For example, you want to start studying but your phone keeps ringing, just put it on silence mode for a while. Start studying and check your phone only when you need a study break.
Identify a motive and a goal – Do you have a dream? What is it? What would it take you to get there? You probably had an answer for all of this question. You need to start studying for that Maths test, but you really don’t want to do it now. When this happens, tell yourself that you only have one shot to ace this test and that’s it. You can binge on the episodes of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy over and over again and as much as you want, but you’ve got only one chance to do well on this test. So make sure you use it well. Stand up, go look for that book and make sure you know all the material for that test! Come on! You can do it.
Do it now!– Yes I said it before, but fact is the best way to stop procrastinating is to do it now! As soon as you think about it, DO IT! Don’t think about it too much. Just do it.
And remember this, most of the time, for you to succeed, it’s not about what you want to do. It’s more about what you have to do.
At the end of the day, remember that perfection is not attainable but in pursuing it, you can catch excellence.
